Abstract
This undergraduate thesis explores the themes of death and morality in both the fictional and nonfictional works of the 19th century Russian novelist Count Leo Tolstoy. The first chapter contains an analysis of the author’s personal and religious beliefs concerning death and examines his role of author as educator. The second chapter examines death within several of Tolstoy’s short works and explores the moral implications of their deaths for Tolstoy’s readership, keeping in mind the conclusions of the part first.
