Abstract
This thesis addresses Lucy Lippard’s store window installation program at Printed Matter from 1976 to 1986. Lippard’s life and accomplishments are examined to contextualize this particular curatorial project. At Printed Matter, Lippard radicalized the store window as a site for public art; Printed Matter’s two large storefront windows faced outwards for the working class neighborhood of Tribeca in New York City. The window series under Lippard’s curatorial direction reveals an impressive array of political and activist art of the period. Printed Matter’s current affairs are also considered to link Lippard to the current institutional traditions of the organization. This thesis ultimately contends that Lippard’s influence is still apparent and can be traced at Printed Matter over thirty years later.
