Abstract
This thesis explores the concept of human Self-Actualization through the use of introspection and historical examples in order to further engage and explore the topic as it relates to personal achievement in art. This is specifically linked to concepts of Psychology and examples are listed through the use of artistic mediums such as music, art, and art therapy. Self-Actualization is related to Psychology, Music, Art Therapy, and Psychoanalysis. This is further elaborated and developed through historical figures such as William Grant Still, W. C. Handy, Leadbelly, and Robert Johnson. These figures and other historical figures are challenged by great adversity, yet continued to be motivated by goal oriented thinking and personal fulfillment. Their choices and motivations for innovation and personal skill set development allow for glimpses and impressions of self-actualization throughout history. These skill sets and personal choices reflect those of all individuals and can be related to many facets of growth in people’s lives. This work can be beneficial to the growth of new areas of research in the fields of Psychology, Music, Art Therapy, and Psychoanalysis.
