Abstract
Seeking to examine the effect of humor's impact on mood, this study had participants create a humorous caption for a cartoon utilizing affiliative, self-enhancing, self-defeating, or aggressive humor, as well as a control condition in which they simply created a non-humorous caption. Comparing the differences in positive and negative affect before and after this task, no differences were found between the groups. This may support cognitive reappraisal as a mechanism by which humor can be used for emotion management. Limitations and possible ways to refine the methods are discussed.
