Abstract

In this thesis I examine the curricula and teaching strategies employed by the History and Classics departments in the St. Stephen's Middle and High School Preparatory School in Bradenton, Florida. In-class, I focused on instances where teachers sought to elicit thoughtful class participation and engagement with complex social science topics. The individualistic style of education provides creative avenues of exploration for motivated students while allowing for others to pass with little effort. This method is a marker of upper and middle class education, while it is denied to the lower classes of the U.S.
