Abstract

This portfolio thesis concerns the scenographic and interactive technological features of 20th and 21st century theatre performances. Both the production of meaning and the production of theatre environments in these performances share common ground and utilize iconic techniques of production. Where scenography and its features as creating fictional settings are located within the theatre productions I studied, I have identified key theatre production methodologies in image and sound reproduction. The methodologies of concern proved useful in terms of developing my own performance, a multimedia theatre performance entitled Out of the Blue, Blue Water that premiered in the Black Box Theatre at New College of Florida in February 2016. My production work in the 2016 school year is a fundamental part of this thesis. The written and performed parts will work together to develop ideas about the function of reproduction technology, specifically the loudspeakers of my production’s sound design, in divers fields within the theatre discipline. The result of this study into theatre technology intersected with theatre performance combines semiotic analyses of three 20th century play texts and my own production work, a videorecording of my thesis performance, and a musical score for the thesis performance.
