Abstract
This thesis covers the history of censorship during the Roman period. In this thesis, I ask what types of texts and people were censored, as well as how and why the censorship took place. The first chapter focuses on the cases of Republican era and Early Empire (451 BCE – 37 CE). The second chapter is about the Middle Empire and the apparent lack of cases (60 – 284 CE). Finally, the third chapter is concerned with the Late Empire and the rise of Christianity (303 – 438 CE). Even though concept of censorship did not originate in Rome, the process by which later governmental institutions would censor writings and people would have developed from the Roman state.
