Abstract
The Buddhist reform movement navigated through the muddy past of political and social upheaval in China and Taiwan; ultimately leading to a beautiful lotus blossoming: Buddhist modernism. Buddhist modernism, as described by David McMahan, has established strong influential roots in Taiwan through Humanistic Buddhism and socially engaged Buddhism. Fo Guang Shan (FGS), Tzu Chi, Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM), and Chung Tai Shan are the “Four Great Mountains” that are at the forefront of modern Buddhism in Taiwan. Each has ties to the core mission of Humanistic and socially engaged Buddhism. FGS is a Humanistic Buddhist organization that will be the focus of this study. FGS, alongside the three other modern Buddhist organizations, can coexist with great success due to the unique niche that each organization occupies in Taiwan.
