Abstract

In my thesis I went about accomplishing two major tasks: To translate this age old text into the modern era while remaining authentic to the original, and to bridge the gap of understanding between old and new and give modern readers a method to understand the great works of the past in their own way. My thesis outlines many key pieces of context which allow for a more informed read of the Bacchae. I explain who Euripides is and how he influences the underlying myth in his work. I explain the mythological components so that we can understand the characters in their mythological context. I show the relationship between the religious worship of Dionysus and the parallels exhibited in the play. I describe the factors surrounding the writing and performance of the play. I discuss in detail my methods of translation. After a reading of my introductory material, I give my translation. I combined the feel of classical sentence structure and diction with some quality of life changes to make it accessible to modern audiences. Certain sentences retain their archaic roots, while others are changed to be understood without the need for a commentary or classical understanding.
