Abstract
The objective of this thesis was to provide a comprehensive look at local media and journalism trends in 2018 through ethnographic study of a local, lifestyle magazine. With the Internet came the new ability to communicate directly with others online. This disrupted multiple streams of revenue for traditional print publications, as this development rendered classified postings and print advertising obsolete. The circulation of information online also unfathomably increased competition for the attention of readers. My thesis research used ethnographic methods to produce qualitative findings on the strategies employed by SRQ , a local publication in Sarasota, Florida, to stay afloat and profit. My research reflects the absolute importance of meaningful engagement with community members, the only people who care about local updates and information, in order to survive as a small, local publication.
