Abstract

This thesis examines how the 2016 Colombian Peace Deal addresses different classifications of victims within the broader Colombian civil conflict. Utilizing human rights theory and war literature, this thesis identifies three victims of war: civilians, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Ejército del Pueblo (FARC-EP), and the environment. Through content analysis of the 2016 Colombian Peace Deal, I show that it addresses the concerns of these victims in a comprehensive manner, placing a large focus on gender. Furthermore, the Peace Deal also contains factors that scholars have identified as necessary to increase the likelihood of the sustenance of peace. It acknowledges the historical roots of the conflict, addresses the consequences of war and adheres to international norms. Through its comprehensiveness, I find that the Colombian 2016 Peace Deal gives reason to have hope for a long lasting peace.
