Abstract
This work delves into Jean Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony in order to examine some of the compositional techniques, harmonic ideas, and deviations from tradition that make the symphony an outstanding and unique example of symphonic literature. A detailed analysis of the score examines closely multiple passages and ideas within the piece, and makes inferences about their emotional impact and intended function. Separate attention is paid to the very structure of the symphony and its significance in its effect. Lastly, the influence of Sibelius’ techniques and findings is briefly touched upon. An addendum to the thesis is a very short composition utilizing some of the primary techniques listed within the work. It is meant to demonstrate understanding and possibly provide more examples of the features that make Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony such an important work of music.
