Abstract
“New-genre public art” refers to contemporary artistic practice that emphasizes public participation, collaboration, and social intervention over traditional visual aesthetics. The rise of new-genre public art is paralleled by that of participatory planning techniques in urban development, which similarly aim to reactivate community, public space and political process in the twenty-first century. Examining new-genre public art and participatory planning together reveals contradictions in the way community, diversity, and urbanism and commonly conceptualized. This serves to challenge traditional visions of the city, and suggests a more disruptive approach to social life and civic engagement in the pursuit of sustainable and equitable urban environments.
