Abstract
This thesis examines the depictions of violence and gender in Mo Yans novel, Red Sorghum, and Zhang Yimous film adaptation, also called Red Sorghum. Both works are representative of roots-seeking movements in Chinese literature and film during the 1980s, which sought to find a non-politicized cultural identity.
