Abstract

The field of postcolonial studies has rarely looked at American literature in a postcolonial context. The goal of this project is to draw together a traditional postcolonial text, Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness, and an early American novel, Charles Brockden Browns Edgar Huntly, and address problematic issues that appear in both works: the concept of postcoloniality, the portrayal of native peoples, and the situation ofwomen in empire. Most importantly, the focus of this project is on the voices of the two novels narrators, who are neither entirely colonized nor entirely imperialistic characters, and whose voices have been marginalized due to their liminal statuses.
