Abstract

Over the course of the last several decades, sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea have decreased dramatically as a result of overfishing, more dramatically since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The goal of this thesis is to produce an examination of the Caspian Sea as a sturgeon fishery in the context of a general survey of sustainable fisheries management economic theory. Further goals include an exploration of international organizations and initiatives that are invested in the establishment of sustainable policy and implementing management regimes founded in natural resource economic theory. Another objective is to identify a relationship between the overfishing of Caspian sturgeon species and the market for caviar. Ultimately this project indicates that there are possible solutions to the problem. The international community has endeavored to reduce overfishing by restricting the international market for caviar, however, the riparian states have failed to implement effective management regimes, a problem which has dampened the positive effects.
