Abstract
This thesis examines the media's reception of queer images, including drag, androgyny, and homosexuality, in music videos in the 1980s and 1990s. Building from a Queer Theory framework of analysis, based on the writings of Judith Butler and Judith Halberstam, this thesis tracks the media's discourse regarding the gender presentations of four artists, Annie Lennox, Boy George, Andy Bell, and George Michael. This examination demonstrates that the media's heterosexist responses unveil how gender maintained its binary based coherence, in the 1980s and 1990s.
