Abstract
Our creative tools shape what we create. The role of compositional tools in shaping music is very complex, but as users of these technologies it is important to consider the relationship between them. In this thesis I examine Hyperscore (a graphical notational program for children) in comparison with Finale (a notational program for professional composers). This examination is placed within the context of the compositional tools throughout history to understand the limitations and benefits of the programs and the potential effects on the music produced with them. The intended outcome of this research was originally to propose a more flexible and historically aware and therefore more desirable compositional tool, but the actual result was quite different. In the end I learned that whether or not the ideal tool exists or can be created, it is essential that composers working with today's tools are able to conceive of musical ideas beyond those that a specific system makes possible. Ultimately, the use of compositional tools is a choice, and the limitations and advantages of each tool can be used for creative benefit.
