Abstract

This study examines the influence of music in literature by looking at three examples by Latin American authors, that are, El rbol [The Tree] by Mara Luisa Bombal, El perseguidor [The Pursuer] by Julio Cortzar, and El acoso [The Chase] by Alejo Carpentier. The purpose of this thesis is not be to construct perfect analogies between music and literature, but rather, to achieve an innovative understanding of the ways in which musical themes and structures interact in literature by applying concepts such as descriptive music, jazz improvisation, and sonata-allegro form to my literary analysis. In particular, I will be focusing on the manner in which time and space is conceived within music and conveyed through literature, as well as on the ways in which characters of a literary work may be treated as musical themes in the analysis of the dynamics nature of their relationships.
