Abstract
First I noticed the omnipresence of vultures in Florida, then I noticed the controversy surrounding them. Vultures are economically and emotionally divisive, and this combination makes for quite interesting literature. This anthology of writing about vultures is assembled in an attempt to explore what vultures have come to mean and to provide a multi-faceted view of an important Florida bird. This anthology combines writing about vultures by various Florida authors with some of my own writing. Because vultures cross many boundaries, the genres of literature represented here are equally various. Natural history, creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and journalism are grouped thematically and by genre to lend continuity. Each piece of writing by a Florida author is briefly introduced. Tightly related works are put into single chapters, dubbed ensembles. Pictures are included with some pieces and ensembles. My writing in several genres also appears in this volume. My expressive writing corresponds with themes presented by what other Florida writers said about vultures. Most of my expressive work was inspired by anecdotes come upon during research, or by my own direct experience while I was hanging out with vultures on the weekends.
