Abstract
The objective of my thesis project is to examine the theatre as a means of cross- cultural communication. The importance of translating and producing this play lies in the fact that the lessons that Aguirre offers are relevant to non-Spanish speaking people. In this time of recent war, the United States could certainly use some lessons on communicating with other countries and people of different cultural backgrounds. I want to stress the importance of understanding people of different countries as a means to prevent conflict. My interest in cross-cultural communication has led me to complete this three-part thesis project, which combines translation, production, and a written thesis. Translation serves as a form of crossing language barriers. My English translation of the Chilean play, Di6logos de_fin de siglo, expands the cultural audience of the written dialogue presented by Aguirre. The production of my translation shares a more vocal form of the dialogue, as well as other auditory forms of expression. The theatrical aspect of my project allows for another interpretation of the play, and another means to expand the audience of Aguirre's work. Through the written thesis, I am able to present my examinations about translation and production as a means of communication, as well as my observations about the outcome of the project and how to improve future projects. I also analyze Aguirre's political agenda-to challenge humankind to team from its mistakes in history and to prevent the repetition of extreme violence.
