Abstract
This thesis presents my experience contributing to the Arti (A Rust Tor Implementation) open-source project. It describes The Onion Router (Tor), a volunteer-run network that provides anonymity to all kinds of people, and the Rust programming language, a language that brings significant safety improvements over languages like C, which the original implementation of Tor is written in. It describes my experience breaking into the project, starting with the Google Summer of Code program, and my contributions to the project over the course of several months.
