Abstract
This thesis has the goal of creating a scenic model for a new theatrical adaptation of an already existing psychological horror film. To help achieve this, it discusses psychological horror and how sets can create the desired effects of the genre. The thesis is split into two chapters. The first chapter is research-based and goes into psychological horror in both film and theatre. The mediums are looked at individually and then compared through the play and film versions of The Innocents and The Woman in Black. At the end of this chapter, I go into more detail about the practical portion of this thesis. The second chapter follows the practical section of my thesis. This is shown through the design process, construction, and planned implementation. The stage adaptation based on the 2002 film May is constructed for multiple scene changes. These locations include May’s apartment, the animal hospital, the café, the laundromat, the streets, the park, the school, and Adam and Polly’s houses. The sets are designed with the intent of showing the audience the psyche of the main character and how she sees the world she lives in. This is attempted through the use of Expressionism.
