Abstract
The purpose of this project was to create a visual novel developed and designed using the game engine Ren’Py. Ren’Py contains all the tools to create an immersive story experience. Using Ren'Py, layered audio tracks, such as sound effects and background music were added, as well as illustrations layering for background, character interactions, and foreground. Using this engine, the mystery novel “The Bloodstained Letters of Hannah” was created. In this novel, the player investigates the sudden disappearance of her sister. As the player continues to explore the story, the plot diverges into two paths. In the first path the player’s impulsiveness leads them astray, resulting in the player investigation redirected towards mia instead of progressing the actual mystery. This approach is more narrative driven. On this path, the story will revolve around the player making linear decisions that immediately impact how the story unfolds. The second path reflects growth and independence. Before the incident, the player has been sheltered by Hannah. Now that Hannah is missing, the player is forced to explore independence and learn how to make decisions on her own. If the player chooses this direction, there will be more interactive experiences in comparison to the narrative focus gameplay. Although the gameplay of this route is still structured around the narrative, the interactive features will behave dynamically, making the narrative flow according to the player’s choices.
