Abstract

Hermit crabs are crustaceans that typically live inside gastropod shells to protect themselves. Because they carry their shelter with them, much of their behavior, including movement, feeding, and interactions with other crabs, is shaped by the shell they occupy. Bryozoans are colonial suspension feeders that commonly grow on hard substrates, including the gastropod shells used by hermit crabs. As living colonies, bryozoans produce mucus and trap particles while feeding. Interactions between bryozoans and hermit crabs have mostly been studied in the context of shell encrustation, and very few researchers have looked at whether hermit crabs interact with bryozoan colonies as sources of food or shelter. In this study, I observe the behavior of Paguristes tortugae collected from Sarasota Bay in experimental tanks with bryozoan colonies present. Using AnimalTA tracking software, I note how hermit crabs interact with bryozoan colonies and whether bryozoans might be used similarly to coral structures.

Los cangrejos ermitaños son crustáceos que en general viven en el interior de conchas de gasterópodos para protegerse. Como ellos acarrean su habitación, una gran parte de su comportamiento, incluyendo el movimiento, la alimentación y las interacciones con otros cangrejos, es modelada por la concha en la que viven. Los briozoos son organismos coloniales filtradores que crecen comúnmente en sustratos duros, incluyendo las conchas de gasterópodos utilizados por los cangrejos ermitaños. Como colonias vivientes, los briozoos producen mucosidad y atrapan partículas mientras se alimentan. Las interacciones entre los briozoos y los cangrejos ermitaños se han estudiado principalmente en el contexto de la incrustación de conchas, pero pocos investigadores han estudiado si los cangrejos ermitaños interactúan con las colonias de briozoos como fuente de alimento o refugio.
