Abstract
The continued success of an organization in Major League Baseball (MLB) can be attributed to many factors, but they can get there by maximizing the money that is allocated to their payroll. We want to explore the effects that payroll can have on the winning percentage of a team based on how much they spend on certain position groups. We examine the correlations between the amount spent on position groups and winning percentage using simple scatter plots and trend lines. Thereafter, we will then predict the most effective ways to devote the payroll among positions using linear regression, multiple linear regression, and Cohen’s !. The financial data used for this research was obtained from spotrac.com, which includes the yearly total payroll for every MLB team from the years of 2011 to 2024 and the individual amount that was paid to each player for that particular year. The team statistics (wins, losses, winning percentage, etc.) was obtained from mlb.com.
