Abstract
This thesis contains three pieces of work that I originally crafted for my courses over my four years at NCF that have been revised and edited to show my development as a student of color, worker, reade,r and writer. The purpose of this thesis is to showcase how dramatically a person's understanding of their own identity can shift the way they consume and create media, and how this is reflected specifically in works of literature or creative writing. The first piece Overthinking is a hermit crab essay that was changed from a discussion of problems I faced as a first year college student and mimicked the form of a multiple choice exam; the revised piece Survival Guidelines mimics the form of emails to answer the questions I posed in the original and find solutions to the problems I was facing. The next writing piece is called Explication: Lake Isle of Innisfree that is an explication that underwent major revisions that showcase how I would read the poem now as someone who can create new meaning where it doesn't exist and is titled An Immigrant’s Escape to Innisfree . The final work is called A Gift and is a poem I wrote in my third year in response to the administrative changes at NCF. The second part of this explains my intentions moving forward in performing this piece accompanied by a song and why I feel this is important.
