Abstract
This thesis offers a translation of selected passages from Marcus Tullius Cicero’s De Officiis with commentary on his concept of duty and his just war theory, which is a tradition of thought that evaluates the justifications for actions made before, during, and after war. The first part of this thesis looks at the context in which Cicero was writing his theory, his motivations, and what may have influenced his ideas. The second part examines his concept of duty as a natural law theorist and comments on the debate over Cicero’s originality. Finally, the third part examines his just war theory and focuses on his contribution to the two main parts of just war theory: jus ad bellum and jus in bello.
