Abstract
Fraternities have long been at war with their institutions since their inception due to their secret discussions, values and behaviors. Exclusive and inclusive masculinity may offer differing approaches to how institutions view their possible solutions to these unwelcome behaviors. Through a content analysis of documents from seven institutions, the integration of exclusive/ inclusive theories of masculinity are connected to the prevention of sexual assault and hazing. Educating students about the power dynamics involved in the place of fraternities allows for shifts in the mindsets around these long held traditions and beliefs. Values and a critique of normalization highlight the way the values of exclusive masculine fraternities contrast to the values of their institutions.. Respect and awareness are key to bringing about reform as dialogue can assist in those learning about diverse people and ideas. This research offers a starting point for institutions to combine their established practices with new literature on inclusive masculinity to continue to prevent incidents of sexual assault and hazing in their fraternities.
