Abstract
The following pages are part of an experimental multimedia art project with the general theme of “things that one might encounter in musical academia.” This part of the project works like a multi-movement composition, each section having a different character but containing and developing some shared themes. The dominant theme is “Spinning Gears,” or hagurama, which is an homage to Akutagawa Ryūnosuke’s semiautobiographical story of the same name (歯車). It follows the protagonist through his haunting polyglottic descent into madness, characterized by his intermittent hallucinations of “a set of translucent spinning gears.”1
