Abstract
A conceptual treatment of fracture mechanics is presented with a focus on the mechanics relevant to failure in thin films bonded to substrates. The study works towards determining necessary initial conditions for a given crack geometry, with the geometry of a spiral crack pattern given particular consideration. We provide a development of the necessary material including finite element analysis and its application to fracture problems.
