Abstract

This study examines the sherds at the New College of Florida Public Archaeology Lab to investigate brush stroke and other surface treatment methods on native Flordian ceramics. Sherds from the Public archaeology lab were examined with both a dissection microscope and loupe, then their observed patterns were compared to experimental patterns on natural clay pots made by the author. These pots were made in the style of 18th century Seminole Floridian pottery. A summary of the geology and chemistry of clay were included, as well as an examination of the history of Native Floridian peoples so as to better understand the medium and the conditions they were made under. The study found that brushstrokes were likely made with common and fine materials such bootjack wood, fingers and Spanish moss. This process helps to understand the material culture of Florida, which is a key step in preserving their history and their legacy.
