Abstract
This Thesis project is a mixture of writing and an album about popular musical genres that have their roots in American culture. The project covers the decades of the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s, and ending in the 1970’s, with the genres represented being Gypsy Jazz (40’s), Rock and Roll (50’s), American Folk Revival (60’s), and Funk (70’s). The album will feature performances and assistance in the creation of the music from Guest artist who are professional musicians. I perform on the album myself and the full production, recording, mixing, and mastering is all done by me as well. The writing will be a deconstruction of the process involved with making the songs on the album, starting from the initial idea to the studio recording, and finally to the production. After a breakdown of the creation of each individual track, a brief explanation of the cultural and historical significance of the genre of music being discussed. To finish my writing, I will examine my concluding thoughts and feeling about the completed project and explain why I worked on this project and my passion for American music.
