Abstract
Our research group has been focused on preparing a series of new BIPHEP-type ligands bearing -P(ortho-substituted aryl)2 units and their corresponding Ru(II) complexes. This thesis will highlight progress toward synthesizing the target ligand 2,2'- bis(di(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino)biphenyl (4, Chapter 2). Several literature C-C crosscoupling procedures for the preparation of BIPHEP were adapted in attempt to couple two equivalents of (2-bromophenyl)(di-(2-ethylphenyl)phosphine (3) to yield 4. Rather than obtaining 4, most likely due to the steric bulk of the ortho-ethyl groups, several new phosphines were isolated and characterized. In the future, our lab will pursue C-C coupling catalyzed by larger transition metals and explore AAD catalysis. This thesis also reports the synthesis of three new Ru(II) complexes ([CpRu(MeCN)(BIPHEP)]PF6 (6), [CpRu(MeCN)(η2-3)]PF6 (7), and [CpRu(H-3)(MeCN)2]PF6 (8)) and their characterization by NMR, HRMS, and single-crystal X-ray analysis (Chapter 3).
