Abstract

The entire world was flipped upside down as the COVID-19 virus plagued nation-after-nation. People were dying, losing their livelihoods, and being removed from their homes in unprecedented numbers. More susceptible to such economic damage, smaller countries battened-down-the-hatches in effort to help as many people as possible withstand the illness. Contrasting this, the United States, one of the most wealthy nations in the world has seemed to fray their approach to stopping the spread, creating vast disparities between states. Focusing on Florida, New York, Texas, and California, we look to compare statistics and social sentiment between them, as a collective reaction to the policymaking put in place during such time. Trust in government has gone down significantly over recent years, illuminating issues of rapidly-spreading disinformation, particularly when it comes to social media. Finding reliable data is a challenge for those not versed in vetting sources and tackling hefty academic papers. Compounded with this, differing mandates and protocols within the nation further increase the divide of opinion and action. CoronaVIRAL - a social COVID dashboard, attempts to remove such barriers, allowing anyone to view public thought within the United States and analyze people, as well as numbers. CoronaVIRAL includes a call to action, a way of directly impacting the course of the virus.
