Abstract
Distance learning recently became a hot topic in education because of the coronavirus pandemic and has now become a mainstay of education including foreign language study. This thesis will study how distance learning affects language learning anxiety with a focus on students of Mandarin language. The data within this study was acquired through a combination of an original direct survey to college level students of Mandarin, and from previous research done by recognized professionals in the field. The effects of distance learning on Mandarin studies will be explored on two levels: Interaction and Evaluation. The interaction section presents a variety of anxieties that arise from the shift in the dynamics of how students interact with their peers and their educators in a distance learning environment. The Evaluation chapter examines the positive and negative anxieties that arise from the use of technology for assessments and evaluations of Mandarin students’ performance in an online world. Distance learning affects language learning anxiety both positively and negatively in interaction and evaluation, because of both technological and psychological effects on language learning environments and communities.
