Abstract
This thesis examines the history, politics, and films of LGBTQ+ people in Taiwan with a focus on the political and cultural changes that led to Taiwan becoming the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. This thesis also explores the opposition to the LGBTQ+ movement and the representation of LGBTQ+ people in popular films. Over the course of this paper, it becomes clear that the development of LGBTQ+ identities was strongly influenced by migration and cultural imperialism. In modern times, globalization further developed queer identities and helped create the Taiwanese queer community that exists today. By examining the development of Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ identities in history, we can better understand the challenges queer Taiwanese have faced. This thesis also addresses the worries of those who oppose LGBTQ+ movements and how their influence has affected LGBTQ+ rights. The end features an analysis of Taiwanese queer films, which can help both the reader of this paper as well as Taiwanese film audiences come to better understand homosexuality in Taiwan. Upon analyzing queer films from the last 20 years, we will be able to see the trends in film and observe how the gender public's opinion of homosexuality has changed over time.
