Abstract

Can I Bum a Cig? is an English literary translation of a contemporary Ukrainian play written in Russian by Oksana Savchenko in 2019. The play is set in 1991 Soviet Ukraine and Russia and is a coming-of-age story about 15-year-old Ksala as she grows up in the turbulent period of the fall of the Soviet Union. I have adapted this play into the English language for the English-speaking audience which wants to learn about the history of the Soviet Union and what daily life was like for teenagers living through the major transitional period of the fall of the USSR. With the current war raging in the region where this play is set, it is more relevant than ever to share its reflections of history and culture. My translation is guided by Mona Baker’s In Other Words, and Mariia Onyshchuk’s comparative study “Rendering Stylistically Marked Units in the Novel Depeche Mode by Serhiy Zhadan,” and includes an explanation of translation techniques used and other adequate translation solutions for slang and low colloquial language.
