Abstract

In this thesis, I investigated the driving force of Black Female Poets’ voices challenging the state of America during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. I evaluated and analyzed the poetic works of Audre Lorde, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, and Ntozake Shange. Publications by and about these four female poets who were active during the Black Arts Movement were evaluated and analyzed to identify the poets’ intentions, the audiences they hoped to reach and the aspects of society they sought to change.
