Abstract
This study explores barriers and support systems first generation Latinx students in Los Angeles face in their pursuit of higher education. Under the context of a multilayered model of college enrollment, this research study will focus on a single layer where aspects of firstgeneration students’ experiences such as self-efficacy along with knowledge about financial aid and college applications can help us understand their enrollment outcome. The data for this research will be contingent on 50-minute interviews with participants that meet the criteria. Academic preparation and achievement, financial resources, knowledge and information about college, and family support appear to be key indicators of college enrollment for prospective and non-prospective first-generation students in the study. The decisions students make have real life outcomes in being able to enroll at a four year and therefore having access to social and economic mobilization.
