Abstract

The cooperative housing framework provides a marginal solution to the affordable housing crisis and relevant environmental concerns. They are capable of reducing monthly payments and environmental burdens. Members develop a collective stewardship over their environment. Cooperative housing is owned and democratically operated by their residents, granting the stakeholders a direct say in the actions of their housing environment. Giving members similar agency to traditional individual homeowners encourages a longer term perspective in shorter term leases, and in less cost prohibitive ways. Stakeholders are enabled to advocate on their own behalf and collectively which incentivizes adequate maintenance, attention, and consideration for non-financial benefits and burdens.
