Abstract

This is an examination of musical artist Mitski Miyawaki’s construction of identity within her work and external life, centering themes of gender, race, performance, and public perception. I use a combination of personal accounts, interview quotes, lyrical analysis, and sociological/feminist theory to position Mitski within the realm of social transformation, arguing that her presence within the indie music genre carves out valuable avenues of identity exploration for her young, largely female and Asian American fanbase.
