Abstract
This thesis examines the trope of the “alienated character” as it appears in film and litera ture, and makes proposals regarding how this character type would function in a scenario where international travel and fetishized perceptions of the Other are seen as solutions to the character’s alienation. It demonstrates the application of this scenario to this character type through the creation of a novella draft, while later proposing how the draft can be expanded upon to make the themes of tourism and globalization more meaningful. Ex amples from post-war existentialist literature are used, as well as pieces of travel litera ture and films with alienated main characters, both to show how this character has al ready appeared in artistic representations and to show the similarities and contrasts present within the novella.
