Abstract

This article delves into the complicated history of various Everglades restoration attempts. The Everglades is a unique resource but some of the problems it faces as a valuable common pool resource are all too familiar. The Everglades Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir Project that is currently underway and estimated to be completed by 2028 was analyzed both for the political and economic impacts it could have and was found to have a benefit cost ratio of 2.04. The Everglades is used here as a case study to examine the pitfalls of common resource management and to propose possible solutions necessary to keep what is one of the most unique ecosystems in the United States and a great economic resource viable for years to come.
