Abstract
While the early works of Yiannis Tsarouchis were painted in the style of Matisse, it is clear that Tsarouchis cannot be framed as “the Greek Matisse,” or as an artist who simply wished to copy Matisse. By establishing his artistic development before encountering Matisse’s work, and charting the deliberate alterations he made to Matisse’s model, I will show that Tsarouchis used Matisse’s work as a mode through which to explore Greek identity as syncretic and multilayered. Greekness, to Tsarouchis, contains visible layers of historical and cultural periods on the same plane. These individual layers maintain their distinction between each other while asserting an active and equal impact on modern Greece and Greeks.
