Abstract

Since the late 19th century, Cuban baseball players have been playing in the United States on teams in Major League Baseball. Players were found by scouts and agents in Cuba and recruited to be a part of Major League clubs. The recruitment of these players was often exploitative and would not have been possible without a paternalistic relationship between the U.S. government and Cuban government. The recruitment of these players has been a microcosm of the exploitative relations between the U.S. and Cuba. The purpose of this paper is to outline the ways in which the U.S. government was able to obtain political and economic power and control Cuba. Once the government was able to control Cuba, the foundation was set for Major League Baseball to maintain control over the Cuban players and Cuban Leagues.
