Abstract
This thesis will explore how gender non-conforming individuals in Japan live their lives through means of opposition to societal expectations and desire for the removal of (gendered) constraints. Through the lenses of Japanese manga, visual arts, and fashion, I will examine the history of Japan’s gender roles, how the country as a whole has been affected by gendered power dynamics, and what the current social environment is for people who do not conform to modern expectations of what gender should and should not look like. Therefore, this study will yield new understandings of how gender is conceived of in Japan, what gendered expectations are present, and how these norms have been both internalized and abandoned by gender non-conforming Japanese people.
