Abstract

All technological inventions influence and shape us; subsequently these changes influence our next technological creation. This mutually influencing cycle plays a major role in shaping our lives, yet many of us do not think about these interactions and influences critically. Although we know how to construct a computer, we do not understand the role that computers have in influencing the way we think. In this thesis I create a body of paintings of circuit boards and then train an AI to generate new “paintings” based off my own. I utilize three main tools of understanding to try and comprehend these computers. Observation and mimicry, aesthetics as a pedagogical tool, and collaboration with the machine all help me to to find and share a deeper level of understanding of the precarious relationship between us and the machine.
