Abstract

This thesis explores the connections between language, discrimination, inclusion and exclusion, and liturgy. I examine this first in an introduction that discusses the history of the Disability Rights Movement in order to track the development of scholarly models regarding disability. Choosing to use the social model of disability, I go on to discuss theory of language and politically correct culture in Chapter 1. Chapters 2 and 3 are case studies, to argue my ultimate point that even liturgy that claims to be inclusive often falls short of this goal. The thesis concludes with points for further research and suggestions for progress in creating inclusive liturgy.
