Abstract

Transit-oriented development can be a useful approach to urban planning, and can assist in remedying many of the issues that face modern cities. However, there is a certain irony in that transit-oriented development is possibly complicit in effects such as gentrification and displacement of communities. Through this investigation into the literature, applications can be made towards understanding events in the case of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Boyle Heights, which has seen an increasing amount of attempts at transit-oriented development in the last ten years, has been in conflict with planners at many levels of the process. Through the interactions of the community with planners, insight is gained into not only how this type of development affects low-income communities, but also the efficacy of the community’s response to this incoming stimulus.
